What are the main differences between the 2018 and 2020 iPad Pro models?

Where can I find my iPads model number?

Which generation iPad do I even have?

Apple had an announcement recently where they announced the release of two models to add to their new iPad Pro series. The iPad Pro 12.9” 3rd Generation has been replaced with a new model as well as the iPad Pro 11” 1st Generation. So what improvements have been made to the new devices? Here is a comparison of the features of the iPad Pro family.

New Camera Module

The biggest upgrade to the new iPad Pros came to its cameras, which now boasts a 12MP wide-angle lens with an f/1.8 aperture and a 10MP ultra wide-angle lens with an f/2.4 aperture. Other features include True Tone Flash, 5x digital zoom, 63MP panoramas, wide color capture, noise reduction, smart HDR, burst mode, and auto image stabilization.

The main difference between the 2018 and 2020 models are the camera lenses

Physical Design

Similar to previous versions of the iPad Pro these two new models do not differ much from their predecessors, they are in fact almost physically identical other than the camera module which has been changed from an oval shape to a square shape. Sadly because of this simple change no cases for the previous generations will be compatible with the new iPad Pro 12.9” 4th Gen nor the iPad Pro 11” 2nd Gen.

The 2018 and 2020 models of the iPad Pro feature the same exact physical dimensions.

LiDAR Scanner

Located in the camera housing is a newly added LiDAR scanner, which stands for Light Detection and Ranging. This new feature uses reflected light to measure the distance from the iPad to surrounding objects up to 5 meters away. These measurements are taken at the photon level at nanosecond speeds.

How can I identify my iPad model?

The quickest way to identify your tablet model is to flip your iPad around where you will see some information in the middle-lower section. Under the huge, “iPad” name, you will find some very fine print. The text will start with, “Designed by Apple in California Assembled in…”, and at the end of that first line, it will tell you your model number. The model will start with the capital letter “A” followed by a sequence of four digits such as “A1872”.

You can easily find your iPads model number printed on the back of the device.

The second way is relatively easy if you know how to navigate to it through your on-screen, SETTINGS options. Tap on the SETTINGS icon on your iPad, this will launch the SETTINGS menu. Scroll down the menu till you see the option for GENERAL and tap on that to drill in a step further. In the GENERAL menu click on MODEL to switch the part number to the actual model number! Here you will find the model number of the iPad, again starting with an “A” and ending with 4 digits.

In the GENERAL menu you will be able to easily view your iPads model number.

Will it bend?

One major talking point about the 2018 iPad Pros was the fact that they bend extremely easily. Fast-forward to 2020 and it seems like the "bendgate" theory has returned. As you can see in the video below by EverythingApplePro, the 2020 iPad Pros are still venerable to flexing and major damage. Rest assured that our line of aXtion cases will keep your iPad protected, with a MIL-STD-810G rating these cases withstand repeated drops and abuse.
